A Multi faceted Review of Reflective Vests: Safety Assurance and Realistic Challenges

July 05,2025

Recently, several news related to reflective vests have attracted widespread attention, prompting us to have a deeper reflection on their role in life.
In Peru, there have been cases of robbery committed while wearing reflective vests. This type of identification clothing, originally intended to regulate motorcycle riders and ensure their safety, has been used by criminals, making it more covert when committing crimes in densely populated areas. This reflects that even with well intentioned security measures, they may still be maliciously exploited due to complex real-life situations, highlighting the need for a multi pronged approach to social security control. It is difficult to eliminate crime solely through a single means.
Australia also has new regulations on reflective vests in terms of traffic safety. Starting from July 1st, Victoria has expanded the scope of specific traffic regulations, requiring drivers to slow down to 40km/h when roadside assistance vehicles turn on their flashing lights and staff wear reflective vests. This reflects the important reminder role of reflective vests in traffic safety in specific scenarios, which can prompt drivers to be more vigilant and ensure the smooth progress of road rescue and related personnel safety.
However, reflective vests do not always provide absolute safety in all situations. According to a study by IIHS in the United States, some vehicles’ pedestrian automatic emergency braking systems are unable to successfully slow down when facing a dummy wearing a reflective strip jacket, regardless of lighting conditions. This indicates that reflective vests may face unexpected situations in the face of modern technology, posing potential risks to vehicles and pedestrians who rely on such advanced safety systems.
In summary, reflective vests are important safety equipment in most scenarios, whether for road construction workers, cyclists, or specific operators, they can improve their visibility and reduce the risk of accidents. But we also need to face the reality of its possible abuse and compatibility issues with modern technology. In the future, on the one hand, it is necessary to strengthen social management to prevent it from being used for illegal purposes; On the other hand, technology developers should also strive to optimize vehicle safety systems so that they can accurately identify pedestrians under various clothing, making reflective vests truly reliable equipment for comprehensive safety protection.
